Etosha

Etosha is one of Africa’s great wildlife reserves, set in the north of Namibia around the vast salt pan that gives the park its name, a shimmering white expanse so large it can be seen from space. For much of the year the pan is a dry, cracked bed of pale mineral flats, fringed by grassland, mopane woodland and a scattering of waterholes that become the stage on which the park’s wildlife plays out.

The waterholes are the key to Etosha. Because surface water is scarce, game concentrates around the springs and pumped holes, and visitors watch from vehicles or from lodge decks as elephant, giraffe, springbok, zebra, lion and the endangered black rhino come down to drink, often in remarkable numbers. This makes for some of the most reliable and unhurried game viewing in southern Africa, particularly around a floodlit waterhole after dark.

The dry season, from roughly May to October, is the prime time to visit, when the sparse water draws animals into the open and the vegetation thins; the green summer months bring migrant birds, newborn game and dramatic skies but more dispersed wildlife. Days follow the classic safari rhythm of early and late game drives around the pan and its waterholes.
