Niseko is the most famous skiing destination in Japan, a cluster of linked resorts on the flanks of Mount Annupuri in western Hokkaido, looking across to the perfect volcanic cone of Mount Yotei. It owes its international reputation to its snow, exceptionally deep and light powder drawn from storms sweeping in off the Sea of Japan, which has made it a byword for the finest powder skiing in Asia.
Around the slopes has grown a lively international scene of restaurants, bars and the natural hot springs, or onsen, that follow a day on the mountain. Winter, from December to March, is the headline season, but summer offers a green and peaceful contrast, with hiking on Mount Yotei, cycling and rafting through the surrounding farmland under mild northern daylight. For families and groups who want space and ski-in access, chalet rentals in Niseko sit within easy reach of the lifts and the springs.
