Périgord people will tell you Périgueux is their capital, and it does feel like one. The town sits on the Isle river. Up top, Saint-Front cathedral has a cluster of domes that look almost Byzantine, which you don't expect in rural France. Below it, medieval and Renaissance lanes. Vesunna, a Roman site, is out on the edge of town under a glass museum. Then the Dordogne countryside: castles, walnut groves. Our château has four bedrooms and sleeps up to eight.

How far is Périgueux from everything?
Bordeaux is around an hour and a half by car. Bergerac airport, around 45 minutes. To get to Sarlat and the cliffs and castles of the Dordogne valley, head south-east for around an hour. In Périgueux itself, leave the car on the edge. The old town is compact, and walking it is easier than parking in it.
Are there castles and villages to see nearby?
Plenty. Brantôme is around 30 minutes north, built on a loop of the Dronne, with an abbey backed against the cliff. Go south and you hit the Dordogne valley, where châteaux and villages hang off the rock. Around 45 minutes away, near Les Eyzies, are caves with prehistoric paintings. A week isn't long enough, honestly.
When are the markets?
Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Stalls fill the squares round the cathedral. In winter there are markets just for truffles and foie gras, and locals take them seriously. Summer's different. In the villages nearby there are evening markets. You get a plate at one stall, a glass at another, then find a seat at a long table, usually next to people you've never met.
