About the Destination
Punta Cana sits at the easternmost tip of the Dominican Republic, the point where the open Atlantic folds into the calmer Caribbean along a coastline locals call the Costa del Coco, the coconut coast. Roughly fifty kilometres of pale sand run north from the cape through Bavaro and Cabeza de Toro, edged almost without a break by coconut palms and screened offshore by a long coral reef that keeps the near water flat, clear and warm enough to swim in through the whole year.
The area reads less as a single town than as a string of gated beachfront communities. Cap Cana, at the southern end, is the most polished of them, built around a deep-water marina, the cliffside Punta Espada golf course laid out along the sea by Jack Nicklaus, and the limestone coves of Juanillo. Inland the land flattens into former sugar country and dense coastal forest threaded with freshwater sinkholes, among them the deep blue cenote at Scape Park. English is widely spoken alongside Spanish, the peso and the US dollar circulate side by side, and Punta Cana International Airport puts much of the eastern seaboard of North America within a short direct flight.
The calendar here is easy to read. The dry season from December to April is the reliable high season, with steady trade winds, warm days and little rain, which is why it also holds the busiest stretch for weddings and family holidays. Summer and early autumn run hotter and greener, quieter and better value, with the Atlantic hurricane season worth factoring in for later plans. Days tend to shape themselves around the water, whether that means snorkelling the reef, sportfishing out of Cap Cana, a catamaran run along the coast, or a long afternoon on a private stretch of beach, with the resort golf courses and the marina restaurants filling the rest.
