The river Sorgue splits just above town, and its channels run right round the old centre. You can see straight to the bottom. Weed streams out in the current like green hair. Here and there an old waterwheel creaks round, thick with moss. People come for the antiques: dealers along the quays and a market every Sunday. Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, where the river rises, is just up the road. Our villa has five bedrooms and sleeps up to six.

When to go
The south has its moment from June to September. July and August are the hottest and busiest; June and September bring the same warm sea with fewer people.

When are the antiques markets?
Every Sunday morning, when the antiques and flea market sets up along the quays alongside the food market. The permanent dealers' galleries open from Friday to Monday. Twice a year, around Easter and in mid-August, there are big international antiques fairs, when the town is packed and parking is hard.
How far is Avignon?
Around 35 minutes by car, and there are local trains too. Avignon has the Papal Palace, the famous broken bridge and, in July, a large theatre festival that takes over the whole city. The TGV station is on the far side of Avignon, handy if you're coming by train from Paris.
Is the town walkable?
Very. The old centre is compact and flat, ringed by the river, and you can cross it in ten minutes. People walk everywhere once they've parked. Whether the villa is in walking distance depends on where it sits, so ask us. Market days are when walking really beats driving.
