Gouverneur Villa Rentals in St Barts
Gouverneur is on the south coast of St Barts, a cove of pale sand between steep green hills, with nothing built behind the beach. The road drops to it from Lurin in a run of tight bends, and the villas sit on the slopes above with the sea to the south and west. A Gouverneur villa rental suits families and groups who want an undeveloped beach close by.

Life in Gouverneur
The road down
Mornings start with the drive down. The lane from the ridge is narrow and steep, and it ends at a parking area above the cove. From there a short paved path drops to the sand in a few minutes. It is an easy walk down and a harder one back up at the end of the day.
Snorkelling off the rocks
Once the sun is up, the rocks at either end of the cove are the place for a mask. The water is clearest on calm mornings, and fish gather along the edges where the sand meets the stone. There is no one renting gear and no lifeguard, so bring what you need and stay within your depth.
Bring your own shade
By the middle of the day the sun is the main thing to plan for. There are no parasols, loungers or kiosks on the beach, and nothing to buy. Some patches of shade reach the sand later in the afternoon, but most people bring a parasol, plenty of water and something to eat.
Sunset over the cove
Late in the day the hills throw their shadows over part of the beach, and the light goes gold across the water. The cove looks south-west, so on clear evenings the sun drops into the sea beyond the point. Then it is back up the hill, with the lights of the villas coming on above.
Nearby neighbourhoods
Distances are straight lines on the map; the drive is longer on the island's winding roads.
When to go
Gouverneur is busiest over Christmas and New Year, when the parking fills by late morning, and at its most peaceful in May and June.
Before you go
What guests ask us most before a stay in Gouverneur.
How do we get down to Gouverneur beach?
By car, then a short walk. A narrow, steep road winds down from Lurin to a parking area above the cove, and a paved path leads from there to the sand in a few minutes. The road has tight bends and is best driven slowly. Most villas here are only a few minutes from the parking area.
Is there shade or anything to buy at the beach?
Very little shade, and nothing to buy. The beach has no kiosks, loungers or parasols, and no facilities. Some patches of shade reach the sand in the afternoon, but they are limited, so bring a parasol, water and food. Gustavia is the nearest place for supplies, a short drive away.
Is the snorkelling good?
Yes, on calm days, along the rocks at either end of the cove. The water is clear and fish gather near the rocks. There is no lifeguard and no equipment for hire on the beach, so bring your own mask and fins, swim with someone and turn back if the sea starts to build.
How far is Gouverneur from Gustavia?
Gustavia is around five minutes from Gouverneur by car, up through Lurin and down the other side of the hill. The road is steep and winding for much of the way. Saint-Jean and the airport are under ten minutes away, a little longer in the busiest weeks of the season.
Is the beach busy?
Rarely, by island standards. With no buildings, no facilities and a steep road down, it stays quieter than Saint-Jean or Shell Beach. The busiest days are around Christmas and New Year, when the parking area can fill by late morning. Arrive early in those weeks and you will still find space on the sand.
