Saint-Jean Villa Rentals in St Barts

Saint-Jean is the bay most guests picture when they think of St Barts: a curve of pale sand, a rocky point in the middle and a village of shops and cafés along the road behind it. Above, the hill rises steeply, and every so often a plane drops over it towards a runway that ends at the beach. Our St Barts Saint-Jean villas sit on that hill and close to the bay. A Saint-Jean villa rental puts you near Gustavia and Lurin, with the beach a short way down.

Life in Saint-Jean

Morning on the bay

Early in the day, the rocky point splits the bay in two. The eastern half is calmer and shelves gently, so that is where most people swim and snorkel, and turtles are often seen close in. The western half, below the airport, is longer and livelier, with windsurfers once the breeze picks up.

The landings

By late morning the planes are part of the view. They are propeller aircraft carrying a handful of passengers, and they come in low over the hill and touch down on a runway that ends at the sand. You will hear them as well as see them. Flights only run in daylight, so the evenings are quiet.

Village afternoons

After lunch, the road behind the beach is the place to wander. Boutiques sit beside cafés, most of them a short walk from the western end of the sand. People come in barefoot from the bay, buy a cold drink and drift back to the water for the last swim of the day.

Sunset from the hill

As the light goes, the hillside villas come into their own. From the terraces you look west over the bay, past the rocky point, towards Gustavia. The last plane has landed by then, the water turns copper and the lights of the harbour start to show across the dark slope of the island.

When to go

Saint-Jean is at its busiest over Christmas and New Year, lively through the dry months to April, then noticeably quieter, warm and easy in May and June.

Before you go

What guests ask us most before a stay in Saint-Jean.

How close is Saint-Jean to the airport?

Very close: the island's airport sits at the western end of Saint-Jean bay, and its runway ends at the beach. Every Saint-Jean villa we list is under 2 km from the runway as the crow flies, so arrival day is short. The airport opens at 7am and closes 15 minutes after sunset, with no night flights.

Can we walk to the beach and the shops?

It depends on the villa. Homes near the bay are within walking distance of the sand and the shops on the road behind it. The hillside villas are higher up on steep roads, and most guests drive down rather than walk. Ask our team how far a particular villa is from the beach before you choose.

Do the planes make much noise?

You will notice them, but the aircraft are light propeller planes rather than jets. They come and go in daylight only, as the airport opens at 7am and closes 15 minutes after sunset. Villas nearest the runway and the western end of the bay hear the most, and the evenings are quiet everywhere.

Is the beach good for young children?

Yes, especially the eastern half of the bay, beyond the rocky point. The water there is calmer and shallow, and the sand shelves gently, which suits young swimmers. The western half, nearest the airport, is livelier and better suited to windsurfing, and the warning signs about the runway should be followed.

Is Saint-Jean busy over Christmas and New Year?

Yes. Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks of the year on St Barts, and Saint-Jean, with its beach and village, is busy with them. The fireworks over Gustavia harbour at New Year draw a crowd from across the island. If you want a villa in Saint-Jean St Barth for those dates, enquire early.
