Vitet is the green, high heart of St Barts, on the slopes below Morne du Vitet, the island's highest point at 286 metres. Life in Vitet

Morning views

From up here, the island is easy to read. The bays of the north coast lie below, the lagoon at Grand Cul-de-Sac shines to the east, and on clear mornings Saint Martin shows on the horizon. Breakfast on the terrace comes with the sound of birds in the trees rather than the sea.

Green and shaded

Through the morning, the garden is the place to be. The slopes around Vitet are some of the greenest on the island, with mahogany and other trees that give real shade. The hill catches the trade winds, so the terraces feel fresher than the sheltered bays below.

Down to the lagoon

In the afternoon, most people drive down to the water. Grand Cul-de-Sac is the nearest beach, a few minutes away by road, with a shallow lagoon held behind the reef. Lorient, on the north coast, is not much further. Both make an easy afternoon before the drive back up the hill.

Starry evenings

After dark, Vitet is one of the quietest places on St Barts. There are no bars or shops close by and very little traffic, so the nights are dark and the stars come out clearly over the hill. The only sounds are the wind in the trees and the frogs in the garden.

When to go

Vitet stays quiet all year; Christmas and New Year are still the busiest weeks, and May and June the most peaceful, green after the first rains.

Before you go

What guests ask us most before a stay in Vitet.

How far is Vitet from the nearest beach?

Grand Cul-de-Sac is the nearest beach, a few minutes down the hill by car. Its shallow, reef-sheltered lagoon suits children and paddleboards. Lorient, on the north coast, is also a short drive away. The roads from Vitet are steep and winding, so most guests drive rather than walk to the sea.

Is it cooler up in Vitet?

It often feels fresher, yes. Vitet sits high on the slopes of the island's highest hill and catches the trade winds, and the trees around it give more shade than the coast. The difference is modest rather than dramatic, but on still, hot afternoons the breeze up here is noticeable.

Do we need a car in Vitet?

Yes. St Barts has no public transport, and Vitet is high on the hill, a drive from every beach, shop and restaurant. A hire car lets you reach the lagoon, the north coast and Gustavia whenever you like. Roads are steep and narrow in places, so a compact car is the usual choice.

What are the views like from Vitet?

Wide, and different from the coast. From the higher villas you look down over the north and east of the island, towards the lagoon at Grand Cul-de-Sac and the bays beyond. On clear days Saint Martin is visible to the north. Exactly what each villa sees depends on where it sits on the slope.

How far is Vitet from Gustavia and the airport?

Gustavia is around fifteen to twenty minutes from Vitet by car, and the airport around ten to fifteen. The route runs down to the north coast and over the hill to Saint-Jean. In the busiest weeks of the season, allow a little longer.
