Gouverneur is Saint-Barthelemy’s most spectacularly beautiful beach, a long crescent of brilliant white sand on the island’s southern coast that can only be reached via a precipitous narrow road descending through dry scrubland. The effort of arrival is thoroughly rewarded: the beach is among the finest in the Caribbean, its waters a deep, saturated turquoise and its mood consistently serene. Nude sunbathing is traditional at Gouverneur, and the absence of beach vendors or commercial facilities preserves its wild, unhurried character. The surrounding hillsides hold some of the island’s most secluded and architecturally distinguished villas, offering complete privacy with the beach accessible on foot and the lights of Gustavia visible across the water after dark.
