Casa Di Roccia sits on a hillside above the sea in northern Corsica, surrounded by the low scrub and wild herb vegetation the island calls maquis, with water visible from the main terrace on clear days. The house is stone-built, following the pattern of rural Corsican construction, with thick walls that keep rooms cool through the summer and a particular quality of quiet that solid masonry creates. The island rewards visitors who slow down and move between activities at a natural pace. The nearest good beach is a twenty-minute drive along a winding coastal road. The small port town a few kilometres away has a market on weekend mornings, a handful of restaurants worth returning to, and a bakery that opens before eight. The mountains in the interior offer a completely different version of the landscape to anyone willing to spend a morning on them.
